Oakland Park traces its roots to the early 20th century, when the area served as farmland and a stop along the Florida East Coast Railway. The city was officially incorporated in 1929, named for the oak trees that originally lined its landscape. After the 1926 Miami Hurricane, residents sought higher ground—the “oak land”—giving the city its practical identity. Post–World War II growth transformed Oakland Park into a residential hub, and recent redevelopment has ushered in a new era with a revitalized downtown, breweries, restaurants, and mixed-use communities.
